Tom Smuts, Emmy nominee and Mad Men producer/writer, biked to this year’s Emmys. On the 1.5 hour bike ride to the awards show, Smuts was also joined by his wife Meredith Stiehm, a two-time Emmy winner and Homeland executive producer, along with 13 other people.
Smuts told The Hollywood Reporter the 17 mile ride from his house in Santa Monica to the Nokia Theatre for the Emmys is “playful activism on behalf of bike commuters,” which was inspired by motorists’ “confrontational attitude” he has felt while cycling.
For his Emmys outfit Smuts wore “bike-friendly evening attire by Rapha.” He also told THR that "a group of people dressed appropriately riding to the Emmys sends a message about the kind of people who commute on bikes. It might make drivers more aware that we're not hooligans trying to lengthen their commutes."
Smuts regularly bikes to work and says he will “organize rides to next year's Emmys and possibly more events.”
